A child’s body was found in Lake Escondido on Saturday, after being reported missing at the Sonora Discovery Park.
The child’s mother was at the park when the boy was reported missing, according to Sgt. Michael DeSantis of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say they found the body about 9:30 p.m.
Saturday at the Discovery Park, near Lake Elsena.
Authorities said they do not believe foul play is involved.
Sonoma Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Heather Halsey said Saturday that the child was taken to the Sonomac Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Sonoma for an autopsy.
Authorities say they do believe the child may have died of hypothermia.
They did not immediately release the child’s name.
DeSantsons son, James, who lives in Lodi, said he had been camping at the lake with a friend when the body was discovered.
De Santis said that while the child did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, his family had been concerned about his welfare since he was reported to be missing.
De Santis’ son, who is 6 years old, has a history of mental illness and a history with alcohol and drugs.
Desantis said he is hopeful that the case will not lead to any more tragedy for the family.
“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” De Santsons father said.
“If I had known that there was a body in that water, I wouldn’t have stayed there.”
