D.C. United announced on Wednesday that it will honor David Bowie on March 3, 2018.
The team and Bowie’s family have already paid homage to him on social media and have launched a #DavidBowieWedding campaign.
“Our family will celebrate David Bowie’s life on March 4, 2018, and we are committed to providing the best wedding celebration possible for him,” the team said in a statement.
“The entire United States and the world will remember his legacy.”
David Bowie, who passed away in May, was the frontman of the rock band Blackstar, which was a major force in the ’60s counterculture and has been widely revered for its pioneering work.
His wife, the singer-songwriter Madonna, is also known for her work in the music industry.
David Bowie was born in Leeds, England, on April 14, 1940.
He went to university at the University of Leeds and studied acting at the Royal College of Dramatic Art, but was soon accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatics and Music in London.
David was an outspoken critic of war and political hypocrisy, particularly the U.K. military, and often performed at anti-war rallies, such as the Summer of Love.
David married Madonna in 1987, after their first child, who was born at the same time.
They were married three years later and had three children.
In the years following their first marriage, Bowie continued to tour and perform.
In 2012, the music superstar announced plans to retire from music and pursue a full-time acting career.
David began to tour with his band, Blackstar in 2014 and in 2017 announced he would be launching a solo career.
Bowie also starred in the 2013 documentary “Bowie: The Man Who Fell to Earth,” which followed him and his band through the years of his career.
David’s death in 2017, as the result of complications from a stroke, led many to call for a new generation of stars to step forward to challenge the status quo.
The Bowie Family Foundation has donated $5 million to the David Bowie Fund, a private charity established by the singer’s family.
